A few days prior to Ash Wednesday and the start of Lent, Carnival celebrations will be held in many cities and town around Mexico which include Huejotzingo, Cozumel, Tepoztlán, Mazatlan, Veracruz, and Chamula. Carnival – History
Many towns and cities throughout Mexico celebrate Carnival in the Spring each year. The Carnival party is always held one week prior of Ash Wednesday, which is known as “miercoles de cenizas” in Spanish. The Carnival party signals the beginning of Lent, which is a time of sobriety before Easter. Each year the Carnival party dates change, but it is always held before Ash Wednesday. In 2019, the Carnival party will start on February 27th through March 5th, and the biggest party will be held on Tuesday, March 5th. Mardi Gras is what this day is referred to in French, which in English means “Fat Tuesday”, and in Spanish, “Martes de Carnaval”.
Costumes and Parades
The Carnival party in Puerto Vallarta is an experience that you have never had before. It is a huge street party in the Old Town neighborhood of Puerto Vallarta.
