Mexican Chocolate

It may surprise you to know that chocolate has been enjoyed in Mexico for over four thousand years, and many different groups such as the Aztecs and the Mayans loved the beans from the cacao tree that is grown in Mexico. Chocolate was used throughout the ages for different purposes; for example, the Mayans would use the beans for medicinal treatments, while the Aztecs used the beans as the main ingredient for a beverage that they would drink for traditional ceremonies.

Chocolate is a modern word, but the word was actually inspired by “xocoatl”, which is an Aztec word. “Xocoatl” is the drink that the Aztec’s brewed using the cacao beans. The Cacao beans were believed to be powerful and magical by the Mayans and the Aztecs and they would use the beans during ancient rituals such as birth, death, and marriages.

The Puerto Vallarta Chocolate Tour includes a short class near the end of the activity. You will get to grind and roast your own cacao beans just as the Aztecs used to do to make the beverage they drank at ceremonies. The Spanish Conquistadors enjoyed the beverage and you can see for yourself if the drink is as good as they thought it was. If you enjoy shopping as much as you enjoy chocolate, then you can purchase different chocolate treats. You can also purchase soaps and lotions made with chocolate grown in the area too.
