The entire month of September in Mexico is “El Mes de la Patria”, which means the month of the homeland in English. The Mexican flag colors of red, white, and green will be seen everywhere. Mexicans have pride in their country, and they respect their rich heritage and traditions. All across Mexico, people will attend ferias or fairs so they can celebrate Mexican Independence Day. Houses and public buildings will all be decorated with Mexican flags, and patriotic parades and festivals will occur on Mexican Independence Day, which is September 16th.

If you arrive or in Cancun on September 15th, then you will be in for an amazing treat. Get ready to start partying like you have never done in the past. Town squares throughout Mexico will start seeing crowds gathering on September 15th at 11:00 pm to celebrate the Grito de la Independencia, which will commigrate Miguel Hidalgo’s call to bring independence back to Mexico that was first heard in September of 1810. This is an iconic moment for people in Mexico, because during that time they rose up against the colonial forces of the Spanish, and the Mexican people reclaimed their status as an Independent Nation. The current mayor of Cancun will shout out the Hidalgo’s replica cry, and the crowd will respond back to the mayor saying “Viva Mexico” three times. Fireworks will be displayed, then the following day on September 16th, there will be parades and ceremonies that you don’t want to miss. There will be tons of parties in town and on the beaches where locals and visitors will come together to celebrate Mexican Independence Day. Everyone will be safe as there will be local police around to make sure all celebrations are peaceful.
