5 Cabo Day Trips: Where To Go

1) Santiago

Originally founded in 1723 as “Mision de Santiago el Apostol,” Santiago is a farming community that is just twenty-three miles from the Los Cabos International Airport. Top attractions in the town include a small museum next to the church where you can browse through interesting exhibits, artifacts, and see fossils that were found by locals. The museum is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm, and there is no entry fee making it a free and interesting activity. Santiago is surrounded by thousands of palm trees, fruit orchards, and farms, and the palm tree leaves are grown to create palapa roofs. The numerous fruit orchard trees are usually orange, mango, and grapefruit varieties. Worked up an appetite? Head to one of the locally owned and operated restaurants to taste local dishes during your visit. Along with sampling traditional Mexican cuisine, visitors can spend time at one of the hot springs located just south of the small town which include the Santa Rita, Agua Caliente, and El Chorro Springs.

2) La Paz

The capital city of Baja California Sur is La Paz, which has a population of approximately 250,000 residents. The La Paz population has been increasing steadily since the early 2000s, and it has some of the highest standards of living in all of Mexico. For this day trip from Cabo, you will want to get an early start leaving town to have time to visit a few of the coastal villages on the way to La Paz. Once you arrive in La Paz, head to the historical center, and then walk along the famous Malecon Boardwalk. The amazing architecture and beautiful Bahia de La Paz views are what impresses visitors the most about the Baja California Sur capital.

3) Miraflores

Thirty miles from the Los Cabos Airport you can find a quaint and charming village known as Miraflores. This sleepy village is surrounded by farms and ranches at the bottom of the Sierra Laguna Mountains. When you visit this village, you can’t miss a visit to some of the old leather works “Talleres,” which are called workshops in English, that line the road that heads into town. There, you will be able to purchase locally made handmade leather goods such as leather wallets, purses, belts, or even a horse saddle that is just perfect for your favorite cowboy or cowgirl. Are you interested in relaxing and enjoying nature at the same time? If so, outside the village you will find hot springs at the base of the mountains where you can relax and distress for a couple of hours before you head back into Cabo.

4) Todos Santos

At the base of the Sierra de la Mountains foothills is a small town known as Todos Santos. Only an hour away from Cabo, tourism has significantly increased to this small town in recent years. You will also notice many new real estate developments are currently under construction, and property prices are on the rise as well. Visitors will love the numerous shops, art galleries, boutiques, fine dining, and colonial buildings that have been recently restored. Peak tourism occurs during the Festival de Cine and the Todos Santos Music Festival that are held each year. When you visit this small town, make sure that you check out the town’s most famous landmark, the Hotel California. It is the ideal spot for a quick drink or a bite to eat on the lovely back patio.

5) San Jose Del Cabo

Approximately twenty-five miles from Cabo San Lucas you will find the sister town of San Jose del Cabo. Did you know that San Jose del Cabo is the only town located on the Baja California Peninsula tip that is hundreds of years old? Centuries ago, Native Indian communities inhabited the area thanks to the palm-lined lagoons which supplied freshwater. They thrived in the area for hundreds of years well before Spanish colonization. Years later, the town was also a stopping point for Spanish sailing boats that had to stop to refresh their water supply and other provisions.
